Ancient Egyptian civilizations date back to 4000 B.C.. This civilization was
very powerful and relied heavily on slave labor. During times of weak
leadership and poor unity, the kingdom was open to invasions from Asia
(Hyksos, Assyrians). Finally the empire fell to the Persians, then to the
Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs. The Arabs introduced Islam and the
Arabic language. The English later defeated the Muslim Ottomans who controlled
Egypt until WWI and won control over the area.
The country became a protectorate of England in 1914 and until 1922.
Sudan became independent of Egypt in 1956. The Society of Free Officers
overthrew King Farouk and set up a republic. Economic liberalization was
encouraged with private domestic and foreign investment.
Aswan High Dam was completed in 1971 which has greatly improved Egypt's
irrigation systems.
Egypt fought with other nations against Israel but lost in 1948. In 1956 Israel
invaded Egypt's Sinai Peninsula after it had occupied Palestine.
After much fighting the two nations agreed to a UN cease-fire.
More fighting broke out between the two nations in 1969-70 and the USSR
and the US got involved. In 1972 Anwar Sadat ordered the Soviet military
advisers and personnel (20,000) to leave Egypt.
In 1979 Egypt and Israel signed a formal peace treaty ending 30 years of war.
In 1982 Israel returned the Sinai to Egypt. President Sadat was assassinated
in 1981.
